When I share that I moved from the Detroit metropolitan area to Seattle, people often nod, saying they understand why I would leave. But they don’t understand. There’s a difference between leaving your roots and running away from them.
No city is perfect, but this city cannot be dismissed. The Motor City is unequivocally radiant. From its community and grassroots organizing, to its tendentious economic development, there’s a spirit I haven’t found anywhere else.
I wasn’t running away from Detroit. Two years later, and this city is still on my mind.
